What is a breast lift?

Mastopexy, also known as the breast lift is a surgical procedure which modifies, lifts and reshapes the sagging or drooping breasts. It enhances the shape and form of the breasts. It is a contouring procedure which involves lifting and tightening the breast skin. This gives a better shape to the breasts. A breast lift procedure perfectly complements the breast enlargement procedure.

What happens during the procedure?

A surgical breast lift procedure lasts for about two hours. Techniques used vary from surgeon to surgeon. The most common procedure involves a small anchor-like incision along the underside of the breast. Then the excess skin is removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. The skin which surrounds the areola may be brought down and together to reshape the breast. If you are planning to pair this with an implant, then the implant will be placed in a pocket which is directly under the breast tissue or under the muscle of the chest wall.

Who is the perfect candidate for this procedure?

Women with sagginess or droopiness of breasts and those whose skin has lost elasticity and firmness in the breast fulfil the basic criteria. Even those who have had a baby or have lost a considerable amount of weight, then expansion of breasts and subsequent contraction can damage the skin. This damage is usually irreparable and causes the akin to loosely hang in the breasts. If the body mass index is below 30, then when BMI increases, the complications related to post-surgery also increases. However, if you are a smoker then you would have to quit smoking at least two weeks in advance as smoking can really hamper the healing process.
